Where the Heart Is

Belgium Waffles, Chocolates, Beer & Fries. Repeat. A day trip to Bruges

Neeru, one of our close friends had this constant craving to visit Bruges for over a year now.

It was her birthday this weekend, and we all thought it would be perfect to celebrate it in Bruges :)

Although a city, it’s small enough so you don’t feel rushed to “see everything” and the pace and atmosphere is that of a lazy town - but with LOTS of tourists.

What to do in Bruges?
As the title suggests, Waffles, Chocolate, Beer, Fries. Repeat.
  • Grab a Belgian hot chocolate and wander around the cobbled alleyways to soak up the pretty canals and gingerbread houses. Head on over the Burg Square or around the Belfry (the big tower) for soaking up the buzz and some medieval gothic architecture

  • Try a Belgian waffle making class paired with Belgian beers. You can find experiences like these on Airbnb.

  • Escape the crowds in the Main Square or around the Tower, by heading to Beguinage.
A 14th century recluse in the middle of the city surrounded by white-coloured houses. Highly recommended to go in spring (March end) when the daffodils are in full bloom. History says that in the 14th century this area was used only by women who didn’t want to marry nor did they want to follow the religious path of being nuns.

Where to eat?
  • Since we were celebrating a birthday in the group, we decided to dine at a gorgeous fine dining restaurant - Restaurant Patrick Devos. The 4 course menu (also available in vegetarian) and the ambience coupled with the service warranted the expensive bill at the end.

  • The potato bar.
Apparently, there’s a subtle underlying tension between Belgium and France over who invited the fries! Not a problem, we can be the judge! Just another reason to eat more fries (for taste testing only ;)). Whichever side you’re on, don’t miss out on trying traditional fries (made with beef oil) when in Belgium. For vegetarians, there’s sweet potato fries available which were just as (or in our opinion) more tasty!

Despite being a very touristy "city", Bruges is really a nostalgic town at heart. It actually reminded us of a combination of Stockholm and smaller German towns like Nuremberg. Bruges’ charming streets, fantastic beers, boutique chocolate-makers and canal-side bars are well worth a visit. Perfect for a weekend getaway or a day trip from Brussels.
